CorDisRDS conducted a Feed Processing Training as part of its continuing efforts to promote sustainable agriculture, strengthen food security, and build resilient farming communities. The activity also demonstrated the value of capacity building as resource persons from CorDisRDS, the Center for Development Programs in the Cordillera (CDPC), and Timpuyog dagiti Mannalon ti Kalinga (TMK), who recently completed the Feed Processing Training of Trainers (ToT), shared their knowledge and practical skills with local farmers. By passing on what they learned, the trainers helped strengthen local capacity and encouraged communities to adopt sustainable farming practices.

The training introduced practical methods of producing organic feeds using locally available materials. Participants learned about proper feed formulation, balanced nutrition, and correct feed preparation for livestock. The sessions emphasized that producing quality feeds at the community level can help farmers reduce production costs while maintaining the health and productivity of their animals, especially during times of rising feed prices and economic uncertainty.

Separate discussions focused on feed processing for chickens and pigs. Farmers learned the appropriate nutritional requirements for different stages of animal growth, proper ingredient mixing, correct measurements, hygiene, and disease prevention. These practices help improve livestock management while supporting healthier and more productive farm animals.

A hands-on demonstration allowed participants to observe and practice the feed preparation process. The practical activity reinforced the lessons shared during the discussions and gave farmers the confidence to apply the techniques in their own households and farms. During the feedback session, participants shared that the demonstration helped them better understand the process and encouraged them to produce their own feeds instead of relying solely on commercial products.

Beyond improving livestock production, the training contributes to broader community resilience. Farmers who can produce affordable and nutritious feeds using local resources are better prepared to cope with rising input costs, supply disruptions, and other challenges that can affect food production. Stronger livestock production also supports household food security and provides additional sources of income, helping families recover more quickly from disasters and other shocks.

The activity reflects CorDisRDS’ integrated approach to development. By strengthening the skills of its own staff through Training of Trainers and supporting farming communities with practical, community-based learning, the organization continues to advance sustainable agriculture, enhance food security, and contribute to Disaster Risk Reduction through resilient livelihoods. As knowledge is shared from trainers to communities, local capacities continue to grow, creating stronger and more prepared farming communities for the future.
