Cordillera Disaster Response and Development Services inc. (CorDisRDS) facilitated the drill exercises under the Project Increasing the Resilience to Natural Hazards (INCREASE) which were participated by Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committee (BDRRMC) members and community representatives from the high-risk areas. The community drills were conducted on November 29, 2021 in Barangay Kaleo, November 30, 2021 in Barangay Chupac, December 1, 2021 in Barangay Lunas and December 7, 2021 in and Ogoog.

The event is aimed to test some parts of their respective contingency plans. Particularly, the familiarity of the BDRRMC members on their functions, the effectiveness and appropriateness of the community based early warning system (CBEWS) and evacuation in the event of worst-case scenarios. In addition, issues and concerns will be identified to improve their contingency plans.

Based from the feedbacks of participants, the community drills accomplished aided in instilling awareness on preparedness and response by serving as an opportunity for the BDRRMC members to perform their function. Further, it gave the participants a chance to put into action what the early warnings mean and practice evacuation in the event of worst-case scenario. On the process, issues that needs to be address were acknowledged by the BDRRMC for the improvement and finalization of their contingency plan.

Most of the participating BDRRMC members of the four barangays said they forgot their functions because they were nervous when the scenario injections were given. The community drill was a first time that was conducted. At first, they were confused on what to do, an acting BDRRMC chairman said. In addition, “with the realization on the importance of the drill, we’ll conduct similar activity in the future at the BLGUs own expense”, a BDRRMC vice chairman said.
